Kenya Pastrolists Week Background
The Kenya Pastrolists Week (KPW) is an annual, week-long event meant to celebrate and reflect on pastoralism both as a lively hood system and as an economic activity, It brings together pastoralists, policy makers, politicians, civil society organizations, researchers and academicians, and Kenyans in general to freely discourse and share experiences about pastoralism.
KPW came into being in 2003 as an annual event as a result of a series of consultative meetings between CEMIRIDE, a number of its partners and other pastoralist stakeholders with interest in the development of the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), including the Pastoralists Parliamentary Group (PPG). A whole week was set aside as a national advocacy forum through which various actors, including mainstream media, could freely interact and share experiences, best practices and lessons learnt on pastoralists and their pastoral livelihoods. The KPW project objectives remain that sustained advocacy on pastoralism and enhanced pro-pastoralists’ policy advocacy and the unveiling of economic, social and cultural opportunities in Kenya and the GHA region, is necessary for improving pastoralists’ lively hoods.
This years KPW 2007 theme focuses on "Marking the road to pastoralist development through good governance, leadership and institutional accountability" The event is to be held from 29th October to 2nd November 2007.
More information to be made available soon.
