PRSP project summary;

Name of Project

Supporting Minorities and indigenous peoples rights to Poverty Reduction in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's)

Location(s) of Project

Nairobi, Koibatek District, All areas in Kenya where Minority & Indigenous people reside.

Name of local partners

Endorois Welfare Organization, Nubian Council, other minority communities in Kenya.

Goal of Project

Planning, policies and actions of development actors related to PRSPs are changed to deliver equitable benefits for minority and indigenous communities

Purpose
Minority and indigenous communities in Kenya improve access into PRSPs, and enhance accountability and good practice among target communities, the Kenyan Government and other development actors to achieve more equitable poverty reduction.
Main activities
  • Research and documentation on best practices framework and tools;
  • Community - based activities, including action research training for partner NGOs/CBOs; support to projects linked to access to education, healthcare (Nubians), livestock improvement and beekeeping(Endorois); advocacy for support thro local devolved funds to these projects;
  • Training on rights based approaches,
  • Advocacy and monitoring tools for members of the community, as well as community projects;
  • Development and dissemination of framework and tools for minority best practices in poverty reduction;
  • Country advocacy strategy planning meetings linked with trainings on advocacy and media tools; Country advocacy strategy activities, including network meetings, advocacy briefs, joint local donor/IGO/GO consultations, local and national government initiatives, as well as interventions with international policy makers (EU, UNDP, World Bank);
  • Bilateral initiatives for international policy change
Expected results

Strengthened capacities of CEMIRIDE, its partners and minority/indigenous communities to advocate for their rights, hold governments accountable, and participate more effectively in poverty reduction processes;

  • Framework and tools for minority best practices on PRSPs/MDGs for communities, donors and governments is recognised nationally and internationally;
  • Critical and constructive engagement with governments and international actors on minority and indigenous issues related to poverty reduction;
  • Governments and development actors take action to review strategies and actions to achieve more equitable poverty reduction.

Nubian community in Nairobi and Endorois community in Baringo/Eldama Ravine districts and other minority and indigenous communities totaling 120,000
